2007:
2007 was an extraordinary year of creativity and experimentation. City of Imagination presented a wide range of works in a variety of fields including two conceptional works Liberty Cake and 101 Sand Castles, Installations A Matter of Conscience, End of the Beginning in Techocolor. Exhibitions combining art and anthropology with works by Herman Trapman focusing on Floridas native peoples and End of Queer which explored the slow disappearance of a uniquely Gay culture in the age of assimilation were presented. New trends in painting were examined in two exhibitions Focus on the Figurative and Look! Look! Look! Additional events included The Gulfport Mostly Limerick Festival, The Annual Gecko Festival Creativity Table and the annual New Years Eve Gala.
Program Overview:
City of Imagination is quickly approaching a decade of serving the arts and the Gulfport Community with innovative programs. A look back reveals a unique organization that has produced notable programs with limited funding and unlimited imagination.
The City as Museum Project which uses public and private spaces as venues has proven not only workable but popular among artists and the community. The annual exhibition of contemporary art Total Risk presented over 200 artists during its five year run. City of Imagination was the first to present the first extensive exhibition of The Highway Men on the west coast of Florida. The exhibition culminated with five of the original Highway Men making the journey to Gulfport. The one year anniversary of the Gulfport ground breaking Human Rights Ordinance was marked with a day long celebration with music, dance and the spoken word. Concern with community design resulted in various Mural Projects. Performance and the written word were strongly represented with various collaborations with performing arts organizations and the creation of The Lawn Chair Literary Festival.
