Film & Conversation with Lama Lhanang Rinpoche:

Art and the Creative Spirit Sunday, December 10, 2012 at 3pm ($10-$15) GULFPORT ARTS CENTER , a City of Imagination Project
2726 54th Street South, Gulfport , Florida
Since the time of the Neolithic European cave drawings and aboriginal rock paintings, the Arts have been an integral part of spiritual expression, evoking the deepest human passions and emotions, as well as our connection to other dimensions. What makes art sacred? What kinds of transcendent states and spiritual realms have artists tried to invoke and evoke? Does the creative spirit lie within the artist, or is it channeled through the artist from a higher power? This episode of Global Spirit seeks answers to these questions by looking at various sacred art forms, and by engaging with artists keenly aware of the spiritual aspect of the creative process. We follow the work and teachings of Buddhist Lama Lhanang Rinpoche and Pueblo Indian sculptor Estella Loretto. Lama Lhanang, who leads a circle of Buddhist practitioners in Los Angeles , creates paintings that depict Buddhist figures and teachings, while Estella sculpts according to the dictates of her Native American spirit and sensibility. Visually engaging and emotionally uplifting, this Global Spirit episode imparts new insights and discoveries about sacred art and the creative spirit from spiritual traditions hailing from parts of the world as seemingly disconnected as Tibet and the American Southwest.

Mixed media artist, Rose Marie Prins’ show opens February 3.

The exhibition, entitled War and Peace and The Height in Between, runs from Friday, February 3 to March 12 at the Catherine Hickman Theater, 5501 27th Avenue South in Gulfport. The artist’s reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. and will feature live music by Tracy and the Doctors of Thinkology and a poetry reading of A War Far and Near, a poem by American poet, Timothy Houghton whose fifth book, The Height in Between was published this month by Orchises Press in Washington, D.C.

Of the nonrepresentational paintings, drawings and sculpture in the exhibition, most of which were created in 2011 and 2012, Prins states, “In this body of work I have incorporated soil and dried plants from Civil War areas of Virginia and Georgia. However, the war I evoke is not literal but an internal battle that is part of the process of human actualization.” Rose Marie Prins has exhibited her work throughout the United States and has taught painting in Eckerd College’s Program for Experienced Learners and at the Morean Arts Center for over a decade.

The theater gallery will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during performances. For more information contact the Catherine Hickman Theater at 727-893-1070 or City of Imagination at 727-344-5443.
