AN INFORMAL ART WORKSHOP
WITH ARTIST/MURALIST KEITH STILLWAGON

SCHEDULE TO BE ANNOUNCED

  • Keith will share his visionary painting techniques with inexperienced and experienced students;
  • share his knowledge and experience with brush, acrylic, canvas and other surfaces;
  •  teach use of various materials and brushes;
  •  share how to save money when purchasing materials; and more.

    Please bring easels, paint, brushes, canvas or other paint surfaces, but items will also be available for use and/or at cost.  Teens and adults only please.
Mr. Stillwagon works in a genre referred to as American visionary painting.
This genre  found great popularity in California during the height of the culture change of the 1960s.  It shares common links to traditional painting found in
India as well as European surrealism.  American visionary painting
incorporates the brilliant colors of the Indian style of painting and removes
the personal detachment associated with European surrealism to achieve
a dreamlike vision.  Influences of Aubrey Beardsley, Maxfield Parrish,
Alfonse Mucha, Da Vinci and Caravaggio are evident in his works.
 Some of his works can be seen in and on various buildings in Gulfport,
on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, Treasure Island, government buildings (e.g., Federal Building in Lakeland, Florida) and abroad (e.g., two resorts on the Caribbean, near Montpelier in Languedoc Rosillon, France).

Anthony Swartwood on Painting:  "I am for the emotion of atmosphere and space using a small portion of a timed essence in life.  The smallest portion of time can be portrayed in many ways to inspire different feelings in the viewer....  Whether the painting is 2"x" or 6'x8', I primarily use oil paint on canvas, panel and wood for my paintings."  Anthony Swartwood

Opening Reception for Stephen Schatz Portraits at the Hickman

City of Imagination invites you to an Opening Reception for Stephen Schatz Portraits at the Hickman, Friday, November 6, 2009, from 5-7 pm at the Catherine Hickman Theater, 5501 27th Ave S in Gulfport.  The exhibition will run through November 30, 2009, and is available for viewing 9-5pm, Monday through Friday.

Biography:  Stephen Schatz grew up in rural Albany, Georgia and earned his Master's degree in painting from Florida State University in 1968.  Later, studies included lengthy stays in New York at the Arts Student League and various academies in Paris.  In 1986, he returned again to Albany, Georgia to accept a teaching position at Albany State University where he remained until his retirement in 2003. Since his relocation to the Tampa Bay area, he continues to paint and enjoys teaching online classes in Art History and Art Appreciation for St. Petersburg College.  More of his work can be viewed at:  http://web.mac.com/stephenschatz and he can be contacted at:  stephenschatz@mac.com

Artist Statement:  My work is an attempt to depict the multitude of feelings and sensations encountered in nature.  The mystery and drama of each human presence and landscape is the catalyst for allof my paintings.  I work direct from life using oil paint.  My technique involves numerous layers; a piling on and a taking off of paint until I get the result that I want.  Sometimes this involves several sessions or a single session.  Either way, my main intent is to bring life to the painting.

"TWO CITIES - TWO ARTISTS - ONE EXTRAORDINARY EVENING"
Act 1,  Cellist and Composer
Tom Kersey
Act 2.  FILLER - Characters From a Few Wasted Nights
An evening of monologues by Micah Freeman

Tom Kersey, cellist and composer, is a musician of uncommon versatility that defies classification.  He is equally at home performing original compositions with his jazz, rock, experimental fusion and world music groups as he is with performing both classical and contemporary works from the classical cello repertoire.

FILLER:  Characters From A Few Wasted Nights, an evening of monologues by 23 year old Micah Freeman, noted for his performance art pieces and featured at the world class Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center as well as many other venues in Cincinnati, is filled with bizarre humor, un-superheroes and compromised individuals yielding to their own desires and missteps.

This entertaining evening of unique insights into our all
too human connections is for mature audiences.

FILLER:  Characters From A Few Wasted Nights will be presented in
collaboration with Permafringe, one of the most innovative alternative
performing and visual arts spaces in Cincinnati.
